THE breath TOOL

video 3: 4-7-8 breathing

This is a shockingly simple yet extremely powerful breath for reducing tension and creating calm.

The 4-7-8 breath was developed by Dr. Andrew Weil and is exactly how it sounds… inhaling for four seconds, holding for seven seconds, and exhaling for eight seconds. Don’t worry if this sounds challenging – in the video below we offer different variations so you can find one that works best for you.

The difference between this breath and the last is the act of retaining the breath, like a pause, between inhales and exhales. Holding the breath in allows you to hang onto oxygen in the lungs so that it can circulate in the body and ignite the “relaxation response” we talked about.

The more you practice these exercises, the more useful they become and the more you will begin to experience the benefits.
